Losing Hair on a GLP-1? Not Every Pumpkin Seed Oil Works. We Ranked the 5 Bottles Women Actually Buy, Worst to Best.

About to order your first bottle, or already took one and got nothing? Five questions decide it, and you can check them on the back of the bottle in under a minute.

Five pumpkin seed oil bottles standing in a row on a pink counter, HALO Hair in the middle
Bought at full price, read back to front. Left to right: NOW, Swanson, HALO Hair, Nature's Truth, Solaray.

Five questions. Ask them before you buy, or before you throw one away.

If there's a bottle in your bathroom already, go get it and turn it around. If you're still shopping, open the Amazon listing and scroll to the label photo. Either way, read the back, not the front.

  1. Does the front say prostate or men's health? If it does, it was built for a man's gland, not your hair.
  2. Is it real pumpkin seed oil with an amount printed? 1,000 mg is a full dose. "3,000 mg" usually means three softgels.
  3. Does it print a second amount, for a saw palmetto extract? Or is there no saw palmetto, or the word blend?
  4. Is there anything for the root besides oil? Zinc, selenium, copper, with numbers. No iodine. Biotin under 100 mcg.
  5. Does it tell you what week four looks like, and who takes the bottle back at week twelve?

Count the passes. Keep the number in your head. It comes back at the end.

If you're losing hair on a GLP-1, somebody has told you about pumpkin seed oil by now. A video, a Facebook group, a friend on the same shot. They're not wrong about the plant. They're wrong about the bottle, because most of the bottles sold under that name were never built for a woman's hair.

Here is the sentence that arrives in our inbox, worded almost the same way every time: "I took pumpkin seed oil for my hair and it didn't do anything." Six months, twice a day, nothing. And it's true. It didn't. This page is about why, and it isn't the plant.

"I bought it as a DHT blocker for hair loss. I did not see any use of it, I used for months but no effect at all. I still have hair loss."

NOW Pumpkin Seed Oil 1,000 mg, two-star review, iHerb

What the pharmacist doesn't sayThe shot took the fat. It took something else with it.

After menopause, most of your estrogen comes from your body fat. Not your ovaries anymore. Your fat. Nobody mentions that when they hand you the pen.

Estrogen has one job at the hair root: it's the bouncer. It keeps DHT out. DHT is the hormone that shrinks the roots on top of your head. Only the top. The back doesn't care. That's why the back of your head is still thick and your part keeps getting wider.

Illustration: before the shot, body fat makes estrogen, which stands at the hair root like a bouncer and keeps DHT out; on the shot the fat is gone, the door is open and only the top thins
Before the shot, body fat pays the bouncer. On the shot, the fat goes, the door opens, and only the roots on top pay for it.

The shot takes the fat. So it takes the estrogen. The bouncer leaves, DHT walks in, and every hair on top grows back a little thinner than the one before.

That's why protein didn't help. A shortage thins everywhere. A hormone thins in one place. And it's why plain pumpkin seed oil isn't enough. Keeping DHT off a root is two jobs.

Illustration of three hair roots: with estrogen at the door, on the shot with the door open, and with pumpkin seed oil turning the tap down and saw palmetto at the door
Three roots. The bouncer, the open door, and the two plants doing the two jobs.
Pumpkin seed oil turns the DHT tap down. Saw palmetto extract stands at the door. A bottle with only the oil does half the job. That's the whole page in two sentences.

Check IWho the bottle was made for

Read the front. Two of the four Amazon bottles say Supports Prostate Health or Men's Health. The other two say nothing. None of them say hair.

A prostate formula needs oil and nothing else, so that's what's in it. That isn't a scam. It just isn't for you. Women buy it because a video said "pumpkin seed oil" and the bottle said "pumpkin seed oil," and nobody read the rest.

"This product is intended for use by men and is not intended for use by women."

Nature's Bounty Saw Palmetto, the label itself, Amazon
Look for: a front that says women. If it says prostate, put it back.

Check IIIs the oil real, and is the amount printed?

All four Amazon bottles pass this one. Real oil, 1,000 mg per softgel. That's a full dose: the trial behind pumpkin seed oil used 400 mg a day for twenty-four weeks, with a placebo group, and the men taking it ended up with about 40 percent more hairs counted. Men, and one trial.

Two traps. "3,000 mg" on the front means three softgels a day of the same oil, not a stronger oil. And only one of the five bottles says cold-pressed.

Look for: the word oil, and a number. 1,000 mg is enough. More isn't better. One woman took 2,000 mg a day for nine months and got nothing.

Check IIIDoes it print the second number?

This is the line that decides it

Pumpkin seed oil is the tap. Saw palmetto extract is the door. It only counts with a number next to it. Inside a "proprietary blend" it can be a pinch, and you'll never know.

None of the four Amazon oils have any saw palmetto at all. The eighty-dollar hair supplement does. We checked. It's hidden in a blend with twenty other things, so the one number that matters is the one you can't read.

"Took this for over three months but I didn't see any results or nothing."

NOW Pumpkin Seed Oil, one-star review, Amazon

"12 months of proper use with zero results."

Nutrafol Women, one-star review, Trustpilot
Look for: two numbers on one label. Oil, and extract. One number is half a formula.

Check IVIs there anything in it for the root?

Keeping DHT out is defense. The root still has to build the next hair, and three minerals help it do that: zinc, selenium, copper. An oil-only bottle has none of them.

Just as important is what a woman's bottle leaves out. No iodine, because a lot of us have a slow thyroid after 45. And only a little biotin. The 10,000 mcg gummies can throw off your thyroid blood test, and do this:

"I had the worst acne while using it that immediately disappeared the second I stopped using it."

Nature's Bounty Biotin 10,000 mcg, one-star review, iHerb

"There's way too much vitamin A in these supplements. My hair started falling out in clumps. My doctor tested my vitamin A levels, very high."

Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails gummies, perimenopausal buyer, Drugs.com
Look for: zinc, selenium and copper with numbers. No iodine. Biotin at 100 mcg, not 10,000.

Check VDid anyone tell you about week four?

A new hair takes five to six weeks to reach the surface, and about twelve to grow long enough to see. Nothing from any bottle shows before then. Some women shed a little more around week four. If nobody warns you, week four looks like failure, and that's the week most bottles get thrown away.

"I've been taking pumpkin seed oil for 4 weeks now and my hair shedding undoubtedly increased since. Could this be a dread shed or a sign it's not a good fit?"

Reddit, women's hair-loss forum, on one of the bottles below

The four Amazon bottles say nothing about timing. They weren't written for hair. And when you give up, Amazon takes back an unopened bottle. Not twelve weeks of your life.

Look for: a timeline printed before you pay, and ninety days to change your mind. Not thirty.

And if you buy the wrong one anyway? Then nothing happens, which is the point. The shot keeps doing what it does. The bottle keeps doing what it does. A year from now you can run it through the same five questions and get the same number, just with a wider part above it.

The rankingFive bottles, worst to best, back label only

We took the five pumpkin seed oil bottles women on a GLP-1 actually buy: the four Amazon bestsellers and the one that was built for this. We read the back of each, scored it on the five checks, then read a few hundred low-star reviews from women who'd taken them. Worst first.

5Swanson Pumpkin Seed Oil bottle

Swanson Pumpkin Seed Oil 1,000 mg

100 softgels · about $9 a bottle · $3 to 5 a month

Passes 1 of 5
  • Front says Men's Health, right under the name
  • Real oil, 1,000 mg printed
  • No saw palmetto
  • No zinc, selenium or copper
  • No timeline. Unopened bottles only

"Softgels are glued. Terrible to take them out of the container. So every day now I'll have to perform a surgery."

One-star review, iHerb

Verdict. The cheapest oil on the list, and the only one honest enough to print who it's for. It just isn't you.

4NOW Pumpkin Seed Oil bottle

NOW Pumpkin Seed Oil 1,000 mg

100 softgels · about $14 a bottle · $4 to 8 a month

Passes 1 of 5
  • Front says Supports Prostate Health
  • Real oil, 1,000 mg printed, hexane-free
  • No saw palmetto
  • No zinc, selenium or copper
  • No timeline. Unopened bottles only

"I bought the NOW brand at two different stores in town weeks apart and both bottles had a terrible rancid odor."

Review on Amazon

Verdict. The one most women already own, from a company that's been doing this for decades. Good oil, half the job, and a prostate label. The woman who panicked at week four above was taking this one.

3Nature's Truth Pumpkin Seed Oil bottle

Nature's Truth Pumpkin Seed Oil 3,000 mg

100 softgels · about $12 a bottle · about $11 a month at three a day

Passes 2 of 5
  • Nothing for men on the front. Nothing about who it's for either
  • Real oil, 1,000 mg per softgel printed. "3,000 mg" is three a day
  • No saw palmetto
  • No zinc, selenium or copper
  • No timeline. Unopened bottles only

"It says 3,000 mg per serving then in the back says 1,000 per each pill so you have to take 3 per day. It doesn't even last you a month."

One-star review, iHerb

Verdict. The big number on the front is a serving size, not a stronger oil. Three pills a day of half a formula, and the bottle is gone in a month.

2Solaray Pumpkin Seed Oil bottle

Solaray Pumpkin Seed Oil 1,000 mg

100 softgels · about $19 a bottle · $6 to 11 a month

Passes 2 of 5
  • Nothing for men on the front. "Lab verified" is the only claim
  • Real oil, 1,000 mg printed, and the lab stamp says you're getting it
  • No saw palmetto
  • No zinc, selenium or copper
  • No timeline. Unopened bottles only

Verdict. The best of the plain oils, and the one we'd buy if all we wanted was the oil. That's also all you're getting. Buy it knowing it's half.

1HALO Hair bottle

HALO Hair

60 softgels, two a day · costs more per bottle · buy two, the third is free

Passes 5 of 5
  • Front says who it's for: women 45+, thinning at the part and crown
  • 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil, printed
  • 320 mg standardized saw palmetto extract, printed. The second number
  • Zinc 10 mg, selenium 55 mcg, copper 1 mg. Biotin 100 mcg. No iodine. No blend
  • Timeline printed before you pay. 90-day money back
  • Two softgels a day, not one. And the most expensive per bottle on this page

"They tell you upfront that nothing happens for five weeks, and it didn't, so I didn't toss it at week four like I have with every other thing I've bought. My hair tie went from four turns to three."

Deb H., 49, three months in

Verdict. The only bottle of the five made for the person buying it, and the only one with the door as well as the tap. Where the others win, they win clearly: price, by a mile, and one softgel instead of two. If you've already tried pumpkin seed oil and it did nothing, this is the one to try before you give up on the idea.

One note on the eighty-dollar hair supplement that isn't on this list because it isn't a pumpkin seed oil bottle. It is made for women, and it does contain saw palmetto. It just won't tell you how much, four pills a day, and the women writing its one-star reviews say the same two things: nothing after a year, and shedding that got worse.

"I took it consistently for 9 months. It did the exact opposite. My hair shed more and more the longer I used it."

Nutrafol, one-star review, Trustpilot
The back of the HALO Hair bottle with every amount printed
The back of number one. Two plants with two numbers, three minerals with three, biotin at 100 mcg, no iodine, no blend.

What to do nowYour bottle probably got one or two. Here's why that's fine.

Most bottles in most bathrooms score one or two out of five. Not because you chose badly, but because nobody handed you the five questions before you bought. Now you have them. And if you haven't bought a bottle yet, you just saved yourself six months.

One honest thing before the link. Number one only works if you take it for twelve weeks, two with breakfast, without skipping. The first four weeks look like nothing. If you'd throw it away at week four, don't buy it. Keep the money.

Compare the two labels side by side

Opens the full label of number one, every amount printed.

The money, in three lines. It costs more per bottle than the Amazon oil. Buy two and the third is free. Ninety days to decide, and if the part hasn't changed, they take the bottles back.

Watch the part, not the drain.

Week nine: short hairs along the line, standing up when you pull the rest back. That's what working looks like. The drain calms down on its own around then anyway. The part doesn't.

Three HALO Hair bottles
Buy two, the third is free. Ninety days to decide. Nothing in it is a hormone.
Read the full ingredient list

Or you close this and take tomorrow's shot like you took today's. That's allowed. The bottle in the bathroom empties a little, you buy the same one again, and the question you had thirty seconds ago goes quiet. Not answered. Quiet.

But you did the part most women skip. You turned the bottle around, or you read the label before you paid. You counted. There's a small group of women on these medications who read the back of everything they take alongside them, the same way they read the back of the pen. You've been one of them for the last nine minutes.

Keep the shot. Keep the weight. Put somebody back on the door.

One bottle available too, no subscription, 90-day money back.

Not for: hair coming out evenly all over rather than at the part and crown; a blood test that says low iron or thyroid (fix that first); a history of hormone-sensitive cancer or prescription medication without asking your doctor about saw palmetto. Keep eating your protein on the shot. It protects your muscle. It was just never hair advice.

Before you buy — quick answers
Is it vegan?

Yes, 100%

Any side effects?

Most people notice nothing. The two plant oils can occasionally upset a sensitive stomach — take the softgels with food. Nothing hormonal, nothing to "come off".

Can I take it with the pill?

Yes. A community pharmacist checked the formula for everyday use alongside the combined pill. On prescription medication, pregnant or breastfeeding? Ask your pharmacist first.

How long until I see anything?

Give it 12 weeks — that's how long a new hair takes to show. The first 8 weeks are usually quiet. Take a photo on day one, same light, and compare at week 12.

Is this a subscription?

That's your choice. Subscribe & Save is ticked by default: you pay less, it arrives every 60 days, the free gifts come with it, and you can skip or cancel in one click. Untick it and it's a straight one-time purchase — nothing renews, nothing to cancel.

My blood work came back "normal". Will this still do anything?

That's the most common story we hear. The amount of DHT in your blood is normal — your roots just react badly to it, and a blood test can't see that. The short version.

How does the 90-day guarantee work?

Finish a round. Don't love it? Email us within 90 days of your first order and we refund you. No forms, no photos, no quibble.

Delivery & returns

US shipping in 3–6 business days. Free on the 3- and 5-bottle packs. Unopened bottles back within 30 days.

Is it a DHT blocker?

We don't make that claim — no supplement can legally promise that. What we do: real saw palmetto extract at 320 mg, cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil at 1,000 mg, and zinc, selenium and biotin at full strength — the three that are allowed to mention hair.

The short version

Why your hair is thinning. The short version.

Illustration: DHT is a hormone everyone has; in some women the hair roots react badly to it; so new hair grows back thinner
1Every hair grows from a root.+It grows for a few years, rests, falls out, and a new one starts from the same root. The root decides how thick the new hair is.
2DHT makes sensitive roots shrink.+DHT is a hormone everyone makes, women too. DHT sticks to hair roots. Some roots have more spots it can stick to. Every time it sticks, that root stops growing a bit earlier than it should and comes back a bit smaller.
3A smaller root grows a thinner hair.+And lets go of it sooner. Your hair isn’t falling out more. It’s coming back thinner, every time. That’s the widening parting.
?Why some roots and not others?+It’s in your genes. The roots on top of your head are born with more spots that DHT can stick to than the roots at the back and sides. That’s why hair thins on top and along the parting, never at the back — and why it often runs in families.
?Why did the doctor say “normal”?+A blood test measures how much DHT you have, and that is normal. It can’t see how sensitive your roots are. So the test is fine, and your hair still thins.
So what needs to happen? You can't switch the hormone off. You look after the roots instead. They need three things. Next bit.

How it works

Three things your roots need. Most products give one.

Tap one to see what's in HALO Hair for it.

Illustration: when hair thins it gets hit from three sides; most products fight one; HALO Hair covers all three

Two plant oils get in the way, so less DHT sticks to the root: pumpkin seed oil, and saw palmetto (an extract from a berry). Most bottles use the whole dried berry as a powder — much weaker — and don't say how much. We use the real extract, at the amount used in studies, and we print it.

In HALO HairPumpkin seed oil 1,000 mg + saw palmetto extract 320 mg. Both printed on the bottle.

Roots work hard for years and pick up everyday damage — the same kind that ages skin. Vitamin E helps protect cells from it. Almost no hair product has it.

In HALO HairVitamin E 50 mg. It contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Hair is built from protein. Zinc is the builder — without it, no new hair gets made. Biotin is the builder's helper — it turns the food you eat into the stuff hair is made of. Selenium keeps the builder safe while it works. Run short of any of the three, and hair is the first thing your body stops building. Only three nutrients have a recognized role in hair — and these are the three.

In HALO HairZinc 10 mg, selenium 55 µg, biotin 100 µg. They contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. Plus B6 and copper.
All three, in two small softgels a day. Every amount printed on the bottle.

The three jobs your roots need — cope with DHT, protect, feed — drawn at the relative size of each
Pumpkin seed oilCope with DHT
1,000 mg

Saw palmetto extractCope with DHT
320 mg

A berry extract that helps the roots cope with DHT. Real extract, not dried-berry powder.

Vitamin EProtect
50 mg

A strong form of vitamin E. Protects the roots from everyday damage.

ZincFeed
10 mgfull daily amount

The builder. Your body uses zinc to make new hair. Most women don't get enough from food.

SeleniumFeed
55 µgfull daily amount

The bodyguard. Keeps the root safe while the new hair is being built.

BiotinFeed
100 µg2× daily amount

The helper. Turns the food you eat into the stuff hair is made of. A little is all you need — not 10,000.

Vitamin B6Feed
1.4 mgfull daily amount

A little helper for hormones.

CopperFeed
1 mgfull daily amount

A little helper for hair colour.

Why these three? Hair is built from protein. Zinc builds it, biotin turns your food into it, selenium keeps the root safe while it's built. Official wording: zinc, selenium and biotin contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto are plant oils — we say what's in them, not what they do.
Not inside: iron, collagen, silly amounts of biotin.

Iron only helps if you're low — ask your doctor to check. Collagen is nice, but it doesn't do any of the three things above. Too much biotin just ends up in the loo.

Who's behind HALO

Two sisters. One parting.

Ellie and Beth, the sisters behind HALO Hair, at their headquarters
Why "HALO"? The ring of fine new hairs around the hairline. Ellie called it her halo long before we put it on a bottle.

Ellie and Beth are sisters. Both thirty-eight. Same mum, same dad. One of them started losing her hair at thirty-four. The other one didn't.

Ellie did what everyone does. Moved her parting. Biotin. A caffeine shampoo. Rosemary oil. Her doctor ran her blood work, said "normal", and said "some women just thin". She went home and accepted it.

Beth didn't. She'd spent eight years checking supplement labels for a living — the person who makes sure the number on the bottle is the number in the bottle. She looked at Ellie's drawer and said: "None of these were ever going to work. Half of them can't even legally mention hair."

So she made one. For Ellie. Then for Ellie's friends. Then for their friends. That's HALO Hair. Still the two of them — just a bigger kitchen table.

Good questions

Things people ask before they buy.

How long before I see anything?

Give it twelve weeks — that's how long a new hair takes to grow long enough to see. The first eight weeks are usually quiet. Take a photo on day one by a window, same spot, same light. Compare at week 12.

What does it cost?

With Subscribe & Save, which is ticked by default: $24.99 for one bottle, $49.99 for three ($16.66 a bottle), $74.99 for five ($15.00 a bottle). Skip or cancel in one click, any time. Prefer to buy once? Untick it: $29.99, $59.99 and $89.99. The free gifts come with the subscription.

Can I take it with the pill?

Yes. We had the formula checked by a community pharmacist for everyday use alongside the combined pill. On other medication? Show your pharmacist the back label. It takes them thirty seconds.

Is this a DHT blocker?

We don't make that claim — no supplement can legally promise that. What we do say: the saw palmetto is a real extract at 320 mg, the pumpkin seed oil is 1,000 mg (pressed without heat), and every dose is printed. The nutrients that are allowed to mention hair — zinc, selenium, biotin — are in at full strength.

My blood work came back "normal". Will this still do anything?

"Normal" blood work is the most common story we hear. A blood test measures how much DHT you have, and that's usually normal. It can't see how sensitive your roots are, and that's what thins hair. One thing first: ask your doctor for your ferritin number. "In range" can still be low for hair.

What if it's iron, thyroid, stress or postpartum?

Then sort that first — honestly. Ask for ferritin, thyroid and vitamin D. HALO Hair has no iron on purpose: it only helps if you're short of it and can clash with other things. We're for the three routes on this page, not a replacement for a blood test.

I have PCOS. Is it for me?

Many of our customers do. With PCOS, the hair roots often react badly to hormones like DHT — that's the first of the three things on this page. If you take spironolactone or other prescription medication, check with your pharmacist first.

Will it mess with my hormones or give me facial hair?

No. Saw palmetto and pumpkin seed oil are foods, not hormones, and at these doses they're widely used by women. They are not minoxidil — the facial-hair stories you've read are about minoxidil.

If I stop, will my hair fall out again?

That fear comes from minoxidil, which only works while you use it. HALO Hair is a dietary supplement: it feeds the routes while you take it, and nothing "rebounds" when you stop. Most people who like it simply carry on.

Can I use it with Rogaine / minoxidil?

Yes — they do different jobs. Minoxidil works on the surface; HALO Hair works from the inside. Plenty of customers use both.

Why a softgel and not a gummy?

Because the two oils need to be oils. You can't put 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil in a gummy — which is why most gummies are just biotin and sugar.

How should I read the before-and-after photos?

As individual results, not as a promise. That is why the small print under them says so. The only before-and-after that decides this for you is your own: week 0 and week 12, same window, same light. Take the first one today.

Any side effects?

Most people notice nothing. Pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto can occasionally upset a sensitive stomach — take the softgels with food. Stop and speak to a pharmacist if anything feels off.

Pregnant or breastfeeding?

Please don't take it without checking with your doctor or midwife first. Saw palmetto is not recommended in pregnancy.

Vegetarian? Vegan? Gluten-free?

Gluten-free, no artificial colors and vegan.

Can men take it?

Yes. The formula is the same; the doses are sensible for everyone. We just built the page for the women who asked first.

Where is it made?

In a GMP-certified facility, third-party tested, and labeled for the US. Most pumpkin seed oil capsules you find online are built for men's prostates — this one is built for women's hair.

How many should I take, and when?

Two softgels a day, with food. Most people take both with breakfast because that is the meal you never forget. Splitting them, one morning one evening, is also fine. There is no loading phase and no cycling.

Is it addictive? Do I have to take it forever?

No, and no. There is nothing habit-forming in it and nothing that "rebounds" when you stop. That fear comes from minoxidil, which only works while you use it. This is a dietary supplement: it works on the routes while you take it, and if you stop, you simply go back to where your own biology was.

Will it affect my libido?

No. That worry comes from finasteride, a prescription drug that works on the same hormone in a completely different way and at a completely different strength. Saw palmetto and pumpkin seed oil are foods, and at these doses they are used daily by a very large number of women.

Will hair start growing on other parts of my body?

No. The stories you have read about that are about minoxidil, which is applied to the skin and can travel. This is a softgel with two plant oils in it. If anything, the coarse chin hair is the thing most women want less of, and it is driven by the same hormone this is aimed at.

Is it natural? Non-GMO?

The two actives are plant oils: cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and a standardized saw palmetto extract. Non-GMO, no artificial colours, no fillers hidden in a blend. The capsule shell is gelatin, which is why it is not vegetarian yet.

Is it safe for everyone?

No supplement is, and anyone who says otherwise is selling. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are on prescription medication, being treated for a hormone-sensitive condition, or under 18, show your pharmacist the back label first. It takes them thirty seconds and every amount is printed on it.
