GLP-1 & your hair
Pumpkin Seed Oil or Saw Palmetto for GLP-1 Hair Loss? 5 Bottles, Ranked
On the shot or about to start? Can you take them with the shot, and which of 5 bottles has the right amounts?

- When the shot takes fat off fast, some estrogen goes with it. That lets DHT thin the top. DHT is a hormone that shrinks hair roots.
- Two plants have been studied for slowing DHT: pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, a palm berry.
- Number one has 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg of saw palmetto, with low biotin.
Both, in one bottle. They're the two plants studied for slowing DHT, a hormone that thins hair on top.
No GLP-1 shot is on the list of drugs known to mix badly with saw palmetto. Taking a blood thinner, birth control pills or hormone therapy? Show your pharmacist the label.
Somebody told you about pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto. Maybe a friend on the shot, or a post you read late at night.
Now you have two questions. Can you take them with the shot? And which bottle is worth it?
If you're on the shot, your brush may already be full of hair. If you’re about to start, you want to get ahead of it.
Why the top thinsWhat's going on
Your body makes two hormones that matter for the hair on top. Estrogen is one. Every woman makes it, and one of its jobs is guarding the hair roots.
The other is DHT. Your body makes it from testosterone, which women make a little of too. DHT shrinks the hair roots on top, so each new hair comes in thinner.
The two pull against each other. While estrogen is up, DHT loses. When estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.

On a GLP-1, that happens in three steps.
- 1Fat makes some of your estrogen
Body fat is one of the places your body makes estrogen.
- 2The shot takes fat fast
Less fat means less estrogen guarding the roots on top.
- 3The top thins, the back doesn't
DHT shrinks the roots on top, but the back stays thick.

How it startsHow you got here
The weight comes off. Then, around month 3, the hair starts falling out.
You see more in your brush and in the drain. Everyone has advice: eat more protein, take biotin, wait it out.
Protein protects your muscle, so keep eating it. But it does nothing for DHT.
So you started reading about DHT. Two plants kept coming up: pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto.
I'm terrified of losing my hair.
A woman on the shot

Then you go to buy some. A lot of the bottles are sold to men, for the prostate.
Not on the shot yet? Then you have time to start before month 3.

Number oneWhat's inside number one, and how it works

You take two softgels a day. Here's everything in them, and how much.
| Ingredient | Per day | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin seed oil, cold-pressed | 1,000 mg | Slows how much DHT is made at the root |
| Saw palmetto extract | 320 mg | Does the same job, in a different way |
| Zinc | 10 mg | A mineral hair roots use to grow |
| Selenium | 55 mcg | Helps protect the cells at the root |
| Copper | 1 mg | A mineral hair needs |
| Vitamin E | 50 mg | Helps protect cells from wear and tear |
| Biotin | 100 mcg | Low on purpose, so blood tests stay accurate |
| Iodine | None | Left out, so thyroid tests stay accurate |
Every amount is printed on the label, with no blend.
How it works
Estrogen helps guard the roots on top. On the shot, you lose some of it along with the fat.
Women make a little testosterone too. At the root, a natural switch called an enzyme turns some of it into DHT.
Both plants slow that switch. So less DHT reaches the roots on top.

Each plant does it in its own way. You don't need a prescription.
Where it comes from
Pumpkin seed oil is pressed cold from the seeds, like good olive oil. Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm that grows wild in Florida.
What the research says
There's one small study, and it was in men. They took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks.
At the end, doctors counted about 40% more hairs. Men on a sugar pill had about 10% more.
There's no study in women yet. Number one has 1,000 mg of the oil a day.
What makes it different
It's the only one here with 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg saw palmetto.
The biotin is kept low, at 100 mcg, and there's no iodine. It's made for women losing hair on top, on the shot or about to start.
