Biotin or Collagen for GLP-1 Hair Loss? Neither Stops Thinning on Top

The same woman three times: before the shot, a year later and much slimmer, and holding a handful of hair over the bathroom sink.
The weight came off. Then the hair started coming out.
In 30 seconds
  • Biotin and collagen feed your hair. Neither one works on DHT, the hormone that thins hair on top.
  • Big biotin doses can throw off blood tests, including thyroid tests. Three of the five below have that much.
  • 5 things women take, checked on the same 5 points. Only one gets all 5 right.
The short answer

Biotin and collagen feed your hair, and you can keep taking them. Neither one works on DHT. That’s the hormone that thins hair on top as the weight comes off.

Big biotin doses can also throw off blood tests. The top pick below keeps biotin low. It also has two plants studied for slowing DHT.

The shot worked, and the weight is finally coming off. Then your hair starts falling out. Everyone says the same thing: take biotin, or collagen in your coffee.

Not on the shot yet? Maybe you’re buying them before your first dose.

Both are cheap and easy, and both feed the hair. But they don’t work on the hormone that thins hair on top.

Why it happensWhat's going on

Most of the hair in the drain is shedding from losing weight fast. It comes out all over your head, then stops by itself.

Thinning on top is different. Two hormones matter for the hair on top. Estrogen is one. Every woman makes it, and one of its jobs is guarding the hair roots.

The other is DHT. Your body makes it from testosterone, which women make a little of too. DHT shrinks the hair roots on top, so each new hair comes in thinner.

The two pull against each other. While estrogen is up, DHT loses. When estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.

Whiteboard: a green stick figure labelled estrogen holds a shield in front of a hair root, and a red spiky ball labelled DHT charges at it. Estrogen guards the roots; DHT shrinks the roots. Written below: when estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.
Estrogen guards the roots on top. DHT shrinks them. When estrogen drops, DHT wins.

On a GLP-1, that happens in three steps.

  1. 1
    Estrogen guards the top

It helps keep DHT away from the hair roots on top.

  2. 2
    You lose fat fast

Your body fat makes some of your estrogen. Less fat means less estrogen.

  3. 3
    The hair on top thins

DHT gets to the roots on top. Each new hair comes in thinner.

Three steps: estrogen guards the hair roots on top against DHT; the shot takes fat fast, and part of your estrogen is made in fat; the top thins while the back stays thick.
With less estrogen, the hair on top thins. The back stays thick.
Thinning on top comes from DHT. Biotin and collagen don’t change that.

How it startsHow you got here

Usually, the weight comes off fast. Two or three months later, your hair starts falling out.

A clump of long brown hair beside the drain of a white bathtub.
Around month 3, you see it in the drain first.

Someone online says biotin. Your stylist says collagen in your coffee.

So you take both, along with your protein and a multivitamin. Lots of women do the same, some before the first shot.

I TRIED to prevent it this time by eating more than enough protein, taking a multi vit, a hair skin and nails vit and collagen...no dice.

Nobody did anything wrong. Biotin and collagen feed the hair, but they don’t work on DHT.

Big doses of biotin can also throw off blood tests, including thyroid tests.

Whiteboard: a big jar of gummies labelled many hair bottles, 3,000 mcg or more, next to one small softgel labelled low dose, 100 mcg. A blood test tube with a question mark: high doses can throw off blood tests.
More biotin doesn't help more, and it can throw off your blood tests.

Blood work is common before the first shot, and while you’re on it. Tell the lab about any biotin before they draw blood.

The checksThe 5 things that matter

A hair product can do two jobs. One is feeding the hair. The other is guarding the roots from DHT.

For guarding the roots, researchers have studied two plants. One is pumpkin seed oil. The other is saw palmetto, the berry of a small palm tree.

Whiteboard split in two: feed the hair (protein, biotin, collagen, iron) and guard the root (pumpkin seed oil, saw palmetto), with a shield stopping DHT. Written below: most hair gummies only do the first job.
Biotin and collagen do the first job. Thinning on top needs the second.

What to look for on the label

Here’s what to look for on the back of the bottle or jar.

  1. Made for women. It says women losing hair on top, not just “hair.”
  2. Feeds the hair. It has things hair uses, like protein, zinc or a little biotin.
  3. The DHT job. It has pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, with the amounts.
  4. Blood tests. Low biotin and no iodine, so your blood tests stay accurate.
  5. 12 weeks. Hair needs about 12 weeks to show a change. Enough for 12 weeks costs about $60 or less.

We checked every product below on these same five things.

Number oneWhat's inside number one, and how it works

Golden pumpkin seed oil in a glass dish, pumpkin seeds on a wooden spoon, and saw palmetto berries on a palm leaf.
Pumpkin seeds and saw palmetto berries, the two plants inside.

You take two softgels a day. Here’s everything in them, and how much. Every amount is printed on the label.

In 2 softgels, as printed on the label
IngredientPer dayWhat it does
Pumpkin seed oil, cold-pressed1,000 mgSlows DHT at the root
Saw palmetto extract320 mgSlows DHT too, in its own way
Zinc10 mgA mineral hair roots use to grow
Selenium55 mcgA mineral that helps protect cells
Copper1 mgA mineral hair uses for its color
Vitamin E50 mgAn everyday antioxidant
Biotin100 mcgLow on purpose, so it won’t throw off blood tests
IodineNoneLeft out on purpose
Whiteboard drawing: testosterone goes through an enzyme and becomes DHT, which reaches the hair root. Pumpkin seed oil 1,000 mg and saw palmetto 320 mg point at the enzyme, and a green bar half closes the way to DHT. Written below: less DHT reaches the root.
Both plants slow the enzyme, the switch that makes DHT. So less DHT reaches the root.

How it works

Estrogen helps guard the top. On the shot, it drops along with the fat.

Women make a little testosterone too. At the root, a natural switch called an enzyme turns it into DHT. That’s the hormone that thins the top.

Both plants slow that switch, so less DHT reaches the roots on top.

Each plant does this in its own way. No prescription needed.

Not on the shot yet? You can start number one with your first shot, before your estrogen drops.

Why the biotin is low

Your body needs about 30 mcg of biotin a day. Number one has 100 mcg, which covers it.

The biotin gummies and softgel above have 3,000 to 10,000 mcg. More isn’t better for hair. And that much can throw off a blood test.

Where it comes from

Pumpkin seed oil is pressed cold from the seeds, like a good olive oil. Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm that grows wild in Florida.

What the research says

There’s one small study, in men. The men took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks. At the end, they had about 40% more hairs.

There’s no study like it in women. Number one has 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day.

What makes it different

It’s the only one here with 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg saw palmetto. And it keeps biotin low.

It doesn’t replace your protein or collagen. It does the other job, guarding the roots on top from DHT.

Your turnNow check yours

Already taking something for your hair? Check the jar or bottle for the same five things.

  • Does it say women on the front?
  • Does it feed the hair, with protein, zinc or a little biotin?
  • Are pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto both on it, with amounts?
  • Is biotin low, with no iodine?
  • Does enough for 12 weeks cost about $60 or less?

How many did it get? Most biotin and collagen jars get one or two.

That’s not your fault. You picked it off the same shelf everyone does.

What women ask about biotin and collagen on a GLP-1

Does biotin help GLP-1 hair loss?

It mostly helps if you’re low on biotin, and few people are. It does nothing about DHT, the hormone that thins hair on top.

Will biotin mess with my blood tests?

It can. Big doses can throw off some lab tests, including thyroid tests. Tell your doctor or the lab about it before they draw blood.

Is collagen worth it on a GLP-1?

Collagen is good protein, and protein protects your muscle. Keep taking it. It just doesn’t help with thinning on top.

Can I keep my collagen and add number one?

Yes. They do different jobs. Number one has only 100 mcg of biotin, so it won’t add a big dose. Show the label to your pharmacist first, especially if you take hormones, birth control or a blood thinner.

How long before I see a difference?

About 12 weeks. Hair needs that long to show a change. As doctors say, shedding usually settles 3 to 6 months after your weight levels off. Starting soon? Begin number one with your first shot. By month 3, when shedding often starts, you’ll be 12 weeks in.

Or you can just close this page.

The jar runs out, you buy another, and you keep checking your part in the mirror.
