GLP-1, menopause & your hair
GLP-1 and Menopause Hair Loss? Why the Top Thins, and 5 Picks Ranked
On the shot or about to start? Why losing fat can thin the top after menopause, and 5 things women take, ranked.

- After menopause, body fat makes most of your estrogen. The shot takes the fat, and some estrogen goes with it.
- DHT is a hormone that shrinks hair roots. With less estrogen, DHT thins the hair on top. The back stays thick.
- 5 things women take for it, ranked. Number one has 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg of saw palmetto, a palm berry.
Less body fat means less estrogen, and estrogen helps guard the roots on top from DHT, a hormone that shrinks them. So the top can thin while the back stays thick.
On the shot or about to start? Number one below works on DHT, with every amount printed.
The shot takes off the weight that came with menopause. But nobody tells you it can also lower your estrogen.
Skip to the ranking ↓What's going on
Your body makes two hormones that matter for the hair on top. Estrogen is one. Every woman makes it, and one of its jobs is guarding the hair roots.
The other is DHT. Your body makes it from testosterone, which women make a little of too. DHT shrinks the hair roots on top, so each new hair comes in thinner.
The two pull against each other. While estrogen is up, DHT loses. When estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.

After menopause, on a GLP-1, that happens in three steps.
- 1After menopause, fat makes estrogen
Your ovaries make less, so body fat makes most of your estrogen.
- 2The shot takes the fat
Less fat means less estrogen reaches the roots on top.
- 3The top thins, the back doesn't
DHT shrinks the roots on top, but the back stays thick.

How you got here
After menopause, the weight wouldn't budge. The shot was the first thing that worked.
Then, around month 3 or 4, your hair started clogging the drain. Maybe someone said it would stop. That part usually does.

But your part kept looking wider. Your ponytail felt thinner, and the back looked the same as ever.
Someone said eat more protein. Your doctor may have said biotin. They were both partly right.
What I have always wondered about is whether declining estrogen also comes from losing fat.
A woman on the shot, in perimenopause
She was right. And none of this is your fault.
Haven't started the shot yet? Hair loss usually starts around month 3, so plan ahead.
5 things to look for on the label
Two plants have been studied for slowing DHT. One is pumpkin seed oil. The other is saw palmetto, the berry of a small palm.

What to look for
Here's what to look for on the back of the label.
- Made for women. The front says it's for women, not men.
- Both plants. It has pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, with the amounts printed.
- Easy to take. Two a day or less. Every amount is printed, not hidden in a “blend.”
- Easy on blood tests. Low biotin, under 1,000 mcg, and no iodine, so thyroid and hormone tests stay accurate.
- 12 weeks at a fair price. Hair takes about 12 weeks to show a change. That should cost about $60.
We checked every product below on these same five things.
The ranking5 things women try for it, worst to best
These are the 5 things women past menopause reach for most. We checked each one on the same five things, straight off the label.

- Easy to take Four capsules, plants in a blend
- Blood tests High biotin, plus iodine
- 12 weeks About $224 with a subscription

Number oneWhat's inside number one, and how it works

You take two softgels a day. Here's every amount on the label, and what each one does.
| Ingredient | Per day | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin seed oil, cold-pressed | 1,000 mg | Slows how much DHT is made at the root |
| Saw palmetto extract | 320 mg | Does the same job, in a different way |
| Vitamin E | 50 mg | Helps protect cells, including at the root |
| Zinc | 10 mg | A mineral hair needs to grow |
| Selenium | 55 mcg | Helps keep hair healthy |
| Copper | 1 mg | Helps keep your natural hair color |
| Biotin | 100 mcg | Low on purpose, so blood tests stay accurate |
| Iodine | None | Left out, so thyroid tests stay accurate |
Estrogen helps guard the roots on top. Losing fat on the shot lowers it.
Women make a little testosterone too. At the root, a natural switch called an enzyme turns some of it into DHT.
Both plants slow that switch. So less DHT reaches the roots on top.

Each plant does it in its own way, and you don't need a prescription.
The pumpkin seed oil is pressed cold from the seeds, like good olive oil. Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm that grows wild in Florida.
There's one small study, and it was in men. They took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks.
At the end, doctors counted about 40% more hairs. There's no study in women yet.
It's the only one here with 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg saw palmetto.
It's made for women losing hair on top, on the shot or about to start.
The biotin is kept low, and there's no iodine. That matters when you get regular blood work.

QuestionsWhat women ask about GLP-1 and menopause hair loss
How do I tell which kind I have?
Hair from the weight loss comes out all over. It usually stops 3 to 6 months after your weight levels off. The hormone kind is only on top: a wider part, a thick back.
When should I see my doctor?
If it's still coming out 6 to 9 months after your weight levels off. Ask about iron, thyroid and vitamin D. Don't stop the shot unless your doctor tells you to.
Can I take number one with hormone therapy?
Nothing in number one is a hormone. Taking hormone therapy, birth control pills or a blood thinner? Ask your pharmacist first.
I haven't started the shot yet. Is it too early?
No. Hair loss usually starts around month 3 or 4. Three bottles last your first 12 weeks, so you're covered from day one.
How long before I see a difference?
About 12 weeks. You won't see much in the first 4 weeks. Check your part at week 8, and decide at week 12.
Or you close this page. That's allowed.
Nothing happens. The shot keeps working, and the scale keeps going down.
Your part still looks a little wider in the bathroom mirror. There's no rush.
You know the five things now. You'll decide for yourself.
