GLP-1 & your hair
Losing Hair on a GLP-1? Why It Happens, and 5 Things Women Try, Ranked
On the shot or about to start? Why the shedding stops, why thinning on top doesn't, and 5 things women try for it.

- It’s common. Most of it is shedding: extra hair falling out after fast weight loss. It usually starts around month 3 or 4 and settles by itself.
- The top is different. If your part gets wider while the back stays thick, that doesn’t settle by itself.
- 5 things women try, checked on the same 5 points. Only one gets all 5 right.
Hair loss on a GLP-1 is common. Most of it is shedding from the fast weight loss. It settles once your weight holds steady.
The other kind is thinning on top, while the back stays thick. It doesn't settle by itself. Number one in the ranking below is made for it.
The shot worked, and the scale finally moved. Then, around month 3 or 4, the hairbrush filled up and your ponytail felt thinner.
Not on the shot yet? You have time to get ready.
Shedding usually starts around month 3.
Why it happensWhat's going on
Two things can happen at once. The first is shedding: hair falling out all over your head. It settles by itself.
The second is thinning on top. That one comes down to two hormones.
Your body makes two hormones that matter for the hair on top. Estrogen is one. Every woman makes it, and one of its jobs is guarding the hair roots.
The other is DHT. Your body makes it from testosterone, which women make a little of too. DHT shrinks the hair roots on top, so each new hair comes in thinner.
The two pull against each other. While estrogen is up, DHT loses. When estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.

On a GLP-1, that happens in three steps.
- 1Estrogen guards the top
It keeps DHT from shrinking the roots on top.
- 2The shot takes fat fast
Part of your estrogen is made in fat, so less fat means less estrogen.
- 3The top thins. The back doesn't.
DHT reaches the roots on top, and each new hair grows in thinner.

How it startsHow you got here
It usually goes like this. The weight comes off fast, and two or three months later the hair starts falling out.

More hair in the brush, more in the drain. Your stylist may say it feels drier and finer than it used to.
Everyone has advice. Eat more protein. Take biotin. Wait it out.
They're not wrong. The shedding does settle. And protein protects your muscle.
But that advice doesn't cover the top.
How will I know if it's not the 'usually reversible' type?
Asked under a doctor's video about GLP-1 hair loss
A mirror can answer that. Shedding thins your hair all over.
The other kind shows only on top, at your part and the crown. The back stays thick. That kind doesn't settle by itself.

What to look for
Here’s what to look for on the back of the bottle.
- Made for women. It says women on the front, not just hair, skin and nails.
- The DHT job. It has pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, with the amounts. Saw palmetto is a palm berry. Both plants have been studied for slowing DHT.
- Form and dose. Two a day or less. Each ingredient shows its own amount, not one total for a “blend.”
- Easy on blood tests. Biotin under 1,000 mcg and no iodine, so your blood tests stay accurate.
- 12 weeks, fair price. Hair needs about 12 weeks to show a change. Those 12 weeks should cost about $60 or less.
We checked every product below on these same five things.
The rankingWhat women on the shot try, worst to best
Women on the shot reach for a protein shake, a biotin gummy, the hair supplement Nutrafol, or minoxidil, a foam you rub on your scalp. We checked all four, plus HALO Hair, on the same 5 things.

Premier Protein 30g Protein Shake
1 shake a day
Gets 1 of 5 right- Made for Muscle, for anyone
- The DHT job Protein and vitamins, nothing for DHT
- Form and dose Every amount printed
- Blood tests Low biotin, a little iodine
- 12 weeks About $168
- Price About $2 a shake
Verdict. Keep drinking it. Protein protects your muscle while the weight comes off. It does nothing about DHT on top.

Nutrafol Women
4 capsules a day
Gets 1 of 5 right- Made for Women
- The DHT job Saw palmetto, amount hidden, no pumpkin seed oil
- Form and dose 4 capsules, plants in a blend
- Blood tests Biotin 3,000 mcg, plus iodine
- 12 weeks About $224, even with a subscription
- Price About $79 to $88 a month
Verdict. The best-known name, made for women, with real saw palmetto. But you can't see how much, and the biotin is high. One month costs more than 12 weeks of number one.

OLLY Heavenly Hair Gummies
2 gummies a day
Gets 2 of 5 right- Made for Hair, for anyone
- The DHT job Biotin and keratin, nothing for DHT
- Form and dose 2 gummies, every amount printed
- Blood tests Biotin 3,000 mcg a day
- 12 weeks About $48
- Price About $16 a month
Verdict. Cheap and easy to take. Nothing in it slows DHT. And that much biotin can throw off a thyroid test.

Women's Rogaine Minoxidil Foam
Half a capful on the scalp, once a day
Gets 3 of 5 right- Made for Women thinning on top
- The DHT job Works on growth, not on DHT
- Form and dose Strength printed, but it's a daily foam
- Blood tests Nothing to throw off a test
- 12 weeks Under $60 for 4 months
- Price About $11 to $15 a month
Verdict. Cheap, and it helps a lot of women. But it doesn't touch DHT. If you stop using it, the label says the hair loss begins again. Some women get facial hair from it.

Two softgels a day. Here is everything in them, and how much.
| Ingredient | Per day | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin seed oil, cold-pressed | 1,000 mg | Slows how much DHT is made at the root |
| Saw palmetto extract | 320 mg | Slows it too, in a second way |
| Zinc | 10 mg | A mineral hair roots use to grow |
| Selenium | 55 mcg | A mineral that helps protect cells |
| Copper | 1 mg | A mineral hair uses for its color |
| Vitamin E | 50 mg | Helps protect cells from everyday wear |
| Biotin | 100 mcg | Low on purpose, so blood tests stay accurate |
| Iodine | None | Left out on purpose |
Every dose is printed on the label. No blend.
How it works
Estrogen helps guard the roots on top. On the shot, you lose some of it along with the fat.
Women make a little testosterone too. At the root, a natural helper called an enzyme turns some of it into DHT.
DHT is the hormone that makes each new hair on top grow in thinner.
Both plants slow that enzyme, right at the root. So less DHT gets made, and less of it reaches the roots on top.

Each plant slows it in its own way. No prescription needed.
Where it comes from
Pumpkin seed oil is pressed cold from the seeds, like a good olive oil. Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm that grows wild in Florida.
What the research says
There is one trial, and it was in men. They took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks. At the end, their hair count was up about 40%.
There's no trial in women yet. Number one has 1,000 mg a day.
What makes it different
It's the only one here with 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg saw palmetto. The biotin is kept low, at 100 mcg, and there's no iodine.
It's made for women losing hair on top, on the shot or about to start.

What women ask about GLP-1 hair loss
Is GLP-1 hair loss permanent?
The shedding usually isn’t. It settles a few months after your weight holds steady. Watch the top. A part that keeps getting wider means thinning on top.
I haven't started yet. Can I get ahead of it?
When shedding comes, it’s usually around month 3 or 4. Eat protein at every meal. Ask your doctor to check your iron and thyroid. Want number one? Start it with your first shot. By month 3, you’ll have given it the 12 weeks it needs.
When should I see my doctor?
If it’s still coming out 6 to 9 months after your weight holds steady. Or any time it worries you. Ask about iron, thyroid and vitamin D.
Can I take number one with my shot?
Number one is two plant extracts, three minerals, vitamin E and a little biotin. Nothing in it is a drug. Show the label to your pharmacist first, especially if you take hormones, birth control or a blood thinner.
How long before I see a difference?
Give it 12 weeks. You won’t see much in weeks 1 to 4. Check your part at week 8, and decide at week 12.
Or you close this page. That's allowed.
Nothing happens. The shot keeps working, and the shedding settles. You keep an eye on your part.
You know the five things now. Next time a bottle catches your eye, check the back.
