Getting Your Protein and Still Losing Hair on a GLP-1? Here's Why

On the shot or about to start? What protein can and can't do for your hair, and 5 things women take for it, ranked.

The same woman three times: before the shot, a year later and much slimmer, and holding a handful of hair over the bathroom sink.
The weight came off. Then the hair started coming out.

  • Keep eating protein. It protects your muscle while the weight comes off. It also helps your hair if you weren't getting enough.
  • Protein won't stop thinning on top. That comes from a hormone called DHT.
  • We checked 5 things women take, from shakes to softgels, on the same 5 points. Only one gets all 5 right.
The short answer

Protein matters on a GLP-1. It protects your muscle, so keep eating it.

But thinning on top, with the back still thick, comes from a hormone called DHT. No amount of protein fixes that.

You did everything you were told. You drank a shake every morning, put collagen in your coffee and weighed your chicken.

Some days you got 100 grams of protein. Your hair kept falling out anyway.

About to start and stocking up on shakes? Good idea.

They'll protect your muscle, but not the hair on top.

Why it happensWhat's going on

There are two kinds of hair loss on the shot. The first is shedding: hair falls out all over, then usually stops on its own.

The second is thinning on top. That has a different cause.

Your body makes two hormones that matter for the hair on top. Estrogen is one. Every woman makes it, and one of its jobs is guarding the hair roots.

The other is DHT. Your body makes it from testosterone, which women make a little of too. DHT shrinks the hair roots on top, so each new hair comes in thinner.

The two pull against each other. While estrogen is up, DHT loses. When estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.

Whiteboard: a green stick figure labelled estrogen holds a shield in front of a hair root, and a red spiky ball labelled DHT charges at it. Estrogen guards the roots; DHT shrinks the roots. Written below: when estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.
Estrogen guards the roots on top. DHT shrinks them. When estrogen drops, DHT wins.

Here's how the shot lets DHT win.

  1. 1
    Estrogen guards the top

It helps keep DHT away from the hair roots on top.

  2. 2
    You lose fat fast

Your body fat makes some of your estrogen. Less fat means less estrogen.

  3. 3
The top thins, the back doesn't

DHT gets to the roots on top. Each new hair comes in thinner.

Three steps: estrogen guards the hair roots on top against DHT; the shot takes fat fast, and part of your estrogen is made in fat; the top thins while the back stays thick.
With less estrogen, the top thins. The back stays thick.
Hair is made of protein. But protein can't stop DHT at the root.

How it startsHow you got here

The weight comes off fast. Then two or three months later, your hair starts falling out.

A protein shake, a shaker bottle and a cup of coffee on a kitchen counter, next to a hairbrush full of hair.
A shake every day, and still a brush full of hair.

Everyone says hair is made of protein, so you start counting grams. 80 a day, then 100.

Some days that's hard. The shot kills your appetite, and one more shake feels like a chore.

All I do is eat protein and I'm still losing hair.

Posted on a GLP-1 forum

That's not your fault. Protein is doing its job. It protects your muscle and helps build each new hair.

But protecting the roots on top from DHT is a different job.

Whiteboard split in two: feed the hair (protein, biotin, collagen, iron) and guard the root (pumpkin seed oil, saw palmetto), with a shield stopping DHT. Written below: most hair gummies only do the first job.
Feeding the hair and guarding the root are two different jobs.

You can tell which kind you have in the mirror.

Two drawings of a woman: on the left, a shortage thins the hair everywhere; on the right, a hormone thins only the top of the head.
Too little protein or iron thins it all over. A hormone thins only the top.

Thinner all over? That's shedding, or you're low on something, like iron.

Thinner at your part and on top, but still thick in the back? That's DHT, and protein won't fix it.

The checksThe 5 things that matter

What to look for on the back

Here's what to look for on the back of the bottle or tub.

  1. Made for women. It says women on the front.
  2. The DHT job. It has pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, two plants that work on DHT, with the amounts printed.
  3. A dose you can read. Every amount is printed. No “blend.”
  4. Blood tests. Low biotin and no iodine. Biotin is a hair vitamin, and too much can throw off a thyroid test.
  5. 12 weeks. It takes about 12 weeks to see a change in your hair. 12 weeks of it should cost about $60 or less.

We checked every product below on these same five things.

Whiteboard drawing: testosterone goes through an enzyme and becomes DHT, which reaches the hair root. Pumpkin seed oil 1,000 mg and saw palmetto 320 mg point at the enzyme, and a green bar half closes the way to DHT. Written below: less DHT reaches the root.
Testosterone turns into DHT at the root. Both plants slow that down.

Every amount is printed on the label. There's no blend. There's no protein either, since your shakes already cover that.

How it works

Estrogen helps guard the roots on top. On the shot, you make less of it as the fat comes off.

At the root, a natural helper called an enzyme turns some testosterone into DHT.

Both plants slow that enzyme down, so your body makes less DHT. The top gets back some of its protection.

Each plant does it a different way. You don't need a prescription.

Where it comes from

Pumpkin seed oil is pressed cold from the seeds, like a good olive oil.

Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm that grows wild in Florida.

What the research says

There's one small study, and it was in men. They took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks.

At the end, they had about 40% more hairs. There's no study like it in women yet.

Number one has 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day.

What makes it different

It's the only one here with 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg saw palmetto.

Biotin is low and there's no iodine, so it won't throw off blood tests. It's made for women losing hair on top, whether they're on the shot or about to start.

Your turnNow check yours

Already using a shake, tub or bottle for your hair? Look at the back for these five things.

  • Does the front say it's for women?
  • Does it have pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, with the amounts?
  • Is every amount printed, with no blend?
  • Is biotin low, with no iodine?
  • Do 12 weeks of it cost about $60 or less?

Count how many times you said yes.

If it's under five, you didn't do anything wrong. You picked it off the same shelf as everyone else.

What women ask about protein and GLP-1 hair loss

How much protein do I need on a GLP-1?

Ask your doctor or dietitian for your number. A common target is 70 to 90 grams a day for a 150-pound woman. That's about 25 to 30 grams at each meal.

Which protein powder is best for GLP-1 hair loss?

The one you'll actually drink every day. Any of them protects your muscle and helps feed your hair. None of them does anything about DHT.

Why am I still losing hair if I eat enough protein?

When you lose weight fast, lots of hairs stop growing and fall out together, no matter what you eat. It usually stops once your weight levels off. Thinning on top comes from DHT. Still shedding 6 to 9 months after your weight levels off? See your doctor and ask about iron, thyroid and vitamin D.

I haven't started yet. Can I get ahead of it?

Yes, you can plan for it. Shedding usually starts around month 3 or 4. Eat protein at every meal, and ask your doctor to check your iron and thyroid. If you want number one, start it with your first shot. That way you've had 12 weeks of it by month 3.

Can I take number one with my shakes?

Yes. It has no protein in it, so it doesn't double up on your shakes. Nothing in it is a drug. Show the label to your pharmacist first, especially if you take hormones, birth control or a blood thinner.

Or you can just close this page.

That's okay. You keep eating protein, the shedding usually stops, and you keep watching your part.

Now you know the five things. Next time a tub or bottle says “hair” on the front, check the back.
