The same woman three times: before the shot, a year later and much slimmer, and holding a handful of hair over the bathroom sink.
The weight came off. Then the hair started coming out.
In 30 seconds
  • Nothing at Hers is made for GLP-1 hair loss. Most of its hair products use minoxidil, the drug in Rogaine.
  • Shedding from losing weight fast settles by itself. Thinning on top doesn’t.
  • 3 Hers products and 2 others, checked on the same 5 points. Only one gets all 5 right.
The short answer

Hers has no hair product made for GLP-1. Most of its hair products use minoxidil, and some need a prescription.

The Hers foam is sold in stores and helps a lot of women. But it does nothing about DHT, the hormone that thins hair on top. And it only works while you keep using it.

The shot came to your door, and the scale finally moved. Then, around month 3, your brush filled up with hair.

Not on the shot yet? You want to get ahead of it. Hair loss usually starts around month 3, so you have time.

Why it happensWhat's going on

Two things can happen at once. The first is shedding: hair falls out all over your head, then it stops by itself.

The second is thinning on top. Two hormones matter for the hair on top. Estrogen is one. Every woman makes it, and one of its jobs is guarding the hair roots.

The other is DHT. Your body makes it from testosterone, which women make a little of too. DHT shrinks the hair roots on top, so each new hair comes in thinner.

The two pull against each other. While estrogen is up, DHT loses. When estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.

Whiteboard: a green stick figure labelled estrogen holds a shield in front of a hair root, and a red spiky ball labelled DHT charges at it. Estrogen guards the roots; DHT shrinks the roots. Written below: when estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.
Estrogen guards the roots on top. DHT shrinks them. When estrogen drops, DHT wins.

On a GLP-1, that happens in three steps.

  1. 1
    Estrogen guards the top

It helps keep DHT away from the hair roots on top.

  2. 2
    You lose fat fast

Your body fat makes some of your estrogen. Less fat means less estrogen.

  3. 3
    The hair on top thins

DHT gets to the roots on top. Each new hair comes in thinner.

Three steps: estrogen guards the hair roots on top against DHT; the shot takes fat fast, and part of your estrogen is made in fat; the top thins while the back stays thick.
With less estrogen, the hair on top thins. The back stays thick.
Shedding settles by itself. Thinning on top doesn’t.

How it startsHow you got here

Usually, the weight comes off fast. Two or three months later, your hair starts falling out.

A plain white delivery box and a silver insulated pouch on the doormat at a front door.
The shot comes in the mail. Your hair is a different problem.

So you open the Hers hair section, and it’s mostly minoxidil. The pills and gummies need an online visit.

The Hers blog says the shot may shift hormones in a way that thins hair on top. The blog’s answer is still minoxidil.

Minoxidil helps a lot of women. But its own label says if you stop using it, the hair loss comes back.

Drawing of calendars with a drop marked on every day, and one missed day leading to thinning along the part again.
Minoxidil works while you use it. If you stop, the loss comes back.

Is minoxidil the kind of med you need to stay on forever bc once you stop the hair loss will return?

Before you start a foam for good, look in the mirror. Shedding thins your hair all over.

Thinning on top shows at the part and the crown, while the back stays thick.

The checksThe 5 things that matter

Researchers have studied two plants for slowing DHT. One is pumpkin seed oil. The other is saw palmetto, the berry of a small palm tree.

What to look for on the label

Here’s what to look for on the back of the box or bottle.

  1. Made for women. It says women losing hair on top, not just “hair.”
  2. The DHT job. It has pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, with the amounts.
  3. A dose you can read. You take it by mouth. Every amount is printed, with no “blend.”
  4. Blood tests. Low biotin and no iodine, so your blood tests stay accurate.
  5. 12 weeks. Hair needs about 12 weeks to show a change. Enough for 12 weeks costs about $60 or less.

We checked every product below on these same five things.

Whiteboard drawing: testosterone goes through an enzyme and becomes DHT, which reaches the hair root. Pumpkin seed oil 1,000 mg and saw palmetto 320 mg point at the enzyme, and a green bar half closes the way to DHT. Written below: less DHT reaches the root.
Both plants slow the enzyme, the switch that makes DHT. So less DHT reaches the root.

How it works

Estrogen helps guard the top. On the shot, it drops along with the fat.

Women make a little testosterone too. At the root, a natural switch called an enzyme turns it into DHT. That’s the hormone that thins the top.

Both plants slow that switch, each in its own way. So less DHT reaches the roots on top.

Minoxidil pushes the hair to grow and leaves DHT alone. These two plants work on the DHT itself.

Where it comes from

Pumpkin seed oil is pressed cold from the seeds, like a good olive oil. Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm that grows wild in Florida.

What the research says

There’s one small study, in men. The men took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks. At the end, they had about 40% more hairs.

There’s no study like it in women. Number one has 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day.

What makes it different

It’s the only one here with 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg saw palmetto. And it keeps biotin low.

It's made for women losing hair on top, whether they’re on the shot or about to start. No prescription, and nothing to rub in.

What women on Hers ask about GLP-1 hair loss

Does Hers have a hair product for GLP-1 hair loss?

Not one made for GLP-1. Most of its hair products use minoxidil. The foam and the drops are sold in stores. The pills and gummies need an online visit and a prescription.

Is GLP-1 hair loss permanent?

Shedding usually isn’t. It settles a few months after your weight levels off. Watch your part. If it keeps getting wider, that’s thinning on top, and that doesn’t stop by itself.

I haven’t started yet. Can I get ahead of it?

Yes. Shedding usually shows up around month 3 or 4. Eat protein at every meal. Ask your doctor to check your iron and thyroid. If you want number one, start it with your first shot. By month 3, you’ll be about 12 weeks in.

Can I take number one with my shot, or with the Hers foam?

They do different jobs. Number one is two plant extracts, three minerals, vitamin E and a little biotin. Nothing in it is a drug. Show the label to your pharmacist first, especially if you take hormones, birth control or a blood thinner.

Or you can just close this page.

The shot keeps working, shedding settles, and you keep an eye on your part.

You know the five things now. Next time Hers shows you a hair product, check the back.
