The same woman three times: before the shot, a year later and much slimmer, and holding a handful of hair over the bathroom sink.
The weight came off. Then the hair started coming out.
In 30 seconds
  • Shedding all over usually stops. Thinning on top, with the back still thick, doesn't stop by itself.
  • Nutrafol is about $88 a month and hides how much of its main plant is inside. Viviscal costs half as much but does nothing for the hormone that thins the top.
  • We checked 5 bottles on 5 things. Only one gets all 5 right, at $20 a bottle.
The short answer

Some women on the shot say Nutrafol helps. But it doesn't show how much saw palmetto, its main plant, is inside. And it's about $88 a month for 4 capsules a day.

Viviscal costs about half as much. But nothing in it works on the hormone that thins the top. Only one of the five below gets all 5 checks right, at $20 a bottle.

The shot is working, and the weight is coming off. Then your hair starts falling out. And Nutrafol has a page just for women like you: “GLP-1 for your body. Nutrafol for your hair.”

It costs about $88 a month, on top of the shot. You want to be sure it's the right one.

Haven't started the shot yet? Hair loss usually starts around month 3, so you have time to get ahead of it.

Why it happensWhat's going on

There are two kinds of hair loss on the shot. The first is shedding. Hair falls out all over your head, then it usually stops.

The second is thinning on top. That has a different cause.

Your body makes two hormones that matter for the hair on top. Estrogen is one. Every woman makes it, and one of its jobs is guarding the hair roots.

The other is DHT. Your body makes it from testosterone, which women make a little of too. DHT shrinks the hair roots on top, so each new hair comes in thinner.

The two pull against each other. While estrogen is up, DHT loses. When estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.

Whiteboard: a green stick figure labelled estrogen holds a shield in front of a hair root, and a red spiky ball labelled DHT charges at it. Estrogen guards the roots; DHT shrinks the roots. Written below: when estrogen drops, DHT wins on top.
Estrogen guards the roots on top. DHT shrinks them. When estrogen drops, DHT wins.

Here's how the shot lets DHT win.

  1. 1
    Estrogen guards the top

It helps keep DHT away from the hair roots on top.

  2. 2
    You lose fat fast

Your body fat makes some of your estrogen. Less fat means less estrogen.

  3. 3
The top thins, the back doesn't

DHT gets to the roots on top. Each new hair comes in thinner.

Three steps: estrogen guards the hair roots on top against DHT; the shot takes fat fast, and part of your estrogen is made in fat; the top thins while the back stays thick.
With less estrogen, the top thins. The back stays thick.
Shedding usually stops by itself. Thinning on top doesn't.

How it startsHow you got here

The weight comes off fast. Then two or three months later, your brush fills up with hair.

People tell you to eat more protein, take biotin or try Nutrafol.

Nutrafol's GLP-1 page says it's from missing nutrients and stress. Both can play a part in shedding.

But neither one explains why the top keeps thinning while the back stays thick.

A woman in a pharmacy vitamin aisle reads the back label of a supplement bottle.
The answer is on the back of the bottle, not the front.

Then there's the price.

I bought nutrafol but it's wayyy too expensive for me to continue.

A woman on the shot, on Reddit

It takes about 12 weeks to see a change in your hair. So you'll buy three months of whatever you pick.

The checksThe 5 things that matter

Most hair bottles feed the hair. But thinning on top needs something that protects the root from DHT.

Whiteboard split in two: feed the hair (protein, biotin, collagen, iron) and guard the root (pumpkin seed oil, saw palmetto), with a shield stopping DHT. Written below: most hair gummies only do the first job.
Feeding the hair and guarding the root are two different jobs.

What to look for on the back

Here's what to look for on the back of the bottle.

  1. Made for women. It says women on the front.
  2. The DHT job. It has pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto, two plants that work on DHT, with the amounts printed.
  3. Every amount printed. One number for each ingredient. No “blend.”
  4. Blood tests. Low biotin and no iodine. Biotin is a hair vitamin, and too much can throw off a thyroid test.
  5. Easy to take. Two a day or less, for the 12 weeks it takes to see a change.

We checked every bottle below on these same five things.

Most hair bottles fail the biotin check. Many have 3,000 mcg or more, and women on the shot get blood tests a lot.

Whiteboard: a big jar of gummies labelled many hair bottles, 3,000 mcg or more, next to one small softgel labelled low dose, 100 mcg. A blood test tube with a question mark: high doses can throw off blood tests.
More biotin doesn’t help more, and it can throw off your blood tests.

Whiteboard drawing: testosterone goes through an enzyme and becomes DHT, which reaches the hair root. Pumpkin seed oil 1,000 mg and saw palmetto 320 mg point at the enzyme, and a green bar half closes the way to DHT. Written below: less DHT reaches the root.
Testosterone turns into DHT at the root. Both plants slow that down.

Every amount is printed on the label. No blend.

How it works

Estrogen helps guard the roots on top. On the shot, you make less of it as the fat comes off.

At the root, a natural helper called an enzyme turns some testosterone into DHT.

Both plants slow that enzyme down, so your body makes less DHT. The top gets back some of its protection.

Each plant does it a different way. You don't need a prescription.

Where it comes from

Pumpkin seed oil is pressed cold from the seeds, like a good olive oil.

Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm that grows wild in Florida.

What the research says

There's one small study, and it was in men. They took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks.

At the end, they had about 40% more hairs. There's no study like it in women yet.

Number one has 1,000 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day.

Studies of saw palmetto for hair used 100 to 320 mg a day. Number one has the top amount, 320 mg.

What makes it different

It's the only one here with 1,000 mg cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil and 320 mg saw palmetto.

Biotin is low and there's no iodine, so it won't throw off blood tests. It's made for women losing hair on top, whether they're on the shot or about to start.

What women ask about Nutrafol and Viviscal on a GLP-1

Does Nutrafol work for GLP-1 hair loss?

Some women say it helps with shedding. Nutrafol has no product made just for GLP-1. Its saw palmetto sits inside a blend, so you can't see how much you get.

Which Nutrafol is best for GLP-1?

Nutrafol's own GLP-1 page points women to Nutrafol Women. Nutrafol Women's Balance costs the same, and it's also 4 capsules a day. Both hide the saw palmetto amount inside a blend.

Nutrafol or Viviscal on a GLP-1?

Viviscal costs about half as much and is easier on blood tests. Nutrafol has saw palmetto, and Viviscal doesn't. Neither has pumpkin seed oil. Number one has 1,000 mg of it, plus 320 mg of saw palmetto.

Can I take Nutrafol or number one with my shot?

Nutrafol says you can take its supplements with a GLP-1. Number one has no drug in it. Show either label to your pharmacist first, especially if you take hormones, birth control or a blood thinner.

How long before I see a difference?

Give it 12 weeks. Check your part at week 8, and decide at week 12. About to start the shot? Start number one at the same time. That way you've had 12 weeks of it by month 3.

Or you can just close this page.

That's okay. The shot keeps working, the shedding usually stops, and you keep watching your part.

And the next time a Nutrafol ad shows up, you'll know to check the back.
